CHIBA, Japan, Jan. 30 2008 KYODO
A total of 10 people have suffered food poisoning, with one of them in a serious condition, in Chiba and Hyogo prefectures after eating Chinese-made frozen ''gyoza'' dumplings, the health ministry and police said Wednesday.
The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry decided to urge Tokyo-based importer JT Foods Co. to stop imports and sales of the dumplings, while notifying China of the situation through the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo.
JT Foods announced Wednesday evening that it would pull from store shelves two kinds of gyoza dumplings that are believed to have caused the food poisoning and 21 other items made at the same production plant in China.
The police have detected traces of an organophosphate called methamidophos inside packaging which is often used in China as a pesticide but is rarely used in Japan.
The police said they believe organophosphates may have been mixed into the dumplings during either production or packaging and they will investigate the food poisoning as possible attempted murder.
According to the health ministry, the dumplings involved in the cases in Chiba and Hyogo prefectures were ''Tezukuri Gyoza'' (handmade gyoza dumplings) and ''Tezutsumi Hitokuchi Gyoza'' (handmade bite-sized gyoza dumplings), respectively.
Both products were made by the same Chinese company and imported by JT Foods.
Of the 10 victims, five members of the same family in Ichikawa, Chiba Prefecture, complained of diarrhea and vomiting after eating frozen dumplings and were admitted to hospital.
One member of the family, a 5-year-old girl, was in a critical condition after temporarily losing consciousness. Her parents and two other children were also seriously ill, according to the police.
None of the victims is in a life-threatening condition, they said.
Two people in the city of Chiba and three in Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture, reported similar symptoms, but all of them have been released from hospital.
Gyoza dumplings, wrapping ground meat and vegetables fillings in a thinly rolled piece of dough, are a popular food item.

Adelaide's Monarto Zoo in South Australia has been faced with the unusual task of hand-raising a spotted hyena cub. The hyena, Sabi, was taken from its parents about three months ago because they were being too rough with it. Since then, the zoo keepers have been carefully hand feeding and weighing the hyena each day.

Polk County , Florida
The Polk County Sheriff's Office calls it one of the biggest marijuana busts in the county's history.
Deputies said they found a grow house with about 350 mature plants inside a Lakeland home.
It all started this weekend when neighbors said they heard a gunshot and saw a car speeding away.
Deputies said two suspects were attempting to rob the homeowners who found nearly a million dollars worth of high grade marijuana and a sophisticated growing operation.
"Certainly this marijuana was ready for harvesting, and we think the suspects knew that," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. “We need to find the two suspects who are driving a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Mercedes or sports vehicle."
This is the third grow house found this month, and the twentieth this year in Polk County.

OAKLAND
Among the products seized were marijuana-laced chocolate candy bars in multiple flavors, cookies, ice cream, peanut butter, jelly, BBQ sauce, chocolate syrup, flavored energy drinks, granola bars, moon pies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels, and "rice krispy" treats.
Federal agents have seized hundreds of marijuana-laced candies, approximately 460 marijuana plants, one handgun, an unknown amount of money in a series of raids in the East Bay, authorities announced Thursday.
Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Javier F. Pena said multiple federal search and arrest warrants had been served in an investigation of Tainted Inc., an Oakland-based company that makes pot-laced candies sold in cannabis clubs in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver and Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
"Tainting candy and other products with marijuana is not sweet, it is criminal," Pena said. "These items could have harmful effects on a user, especially the unsuspecting ones. Manufacturing, distributing, and possessing marijuana-laced products is in clear violation of federal law."
Pena said the investigation began about two years ago and led to Wednesday's searches of Tainted Inc.'s factory, marijuana growing facility, the El Sobrante home of owner Michael Martin, the residence of several other Tainted employees and cars identified as being used in Tainted's operations.
