New Crossover Called Safest Volvo Ever

New_Crossover_Called_Safest_Volvo_EverFor most carmakers – concept cars are created for buzz and intrigue. Not so with Volvo Cars – known for getting its concept cars into production and to market as quickly as possible. Nothing speaks to that more than the new XC60 which is now making its North American debut at the New York Auto Show which runs until March 30th. The new crossover – called Volvo’s safest ever yet – blends together some of the key elements in Volvo concept cars over the last few years: sensors to detect a driver’s heartbeat, side-impact collision; sensors and cameras that alert the driver to approaching lights – and – for the first time ever, the “City Safety System,” which is standard in the new vehicle. The City Safety System is a low speed accident prevention system that will help reduce or eliminate whiplash injuries and vehicle damages from impacts below 18 miles per hour. Using forward sensing laser radar, coupled with intelligent software that calculates situations at the rate of 50 times per second City Safety is a benefit not only to the Volvo it is fitted to but the driver in lead vehicle. Car Safety can help avoid or reduce the effects of low-speed crashes common in heavy traffic. If the car is about to strike the vehicle in front and the driver doesn’t react, the car automatically applies the brakes.

Funny Football Stunts

Funny_Football_StuntsFanatic fans from seven NFL hometowns agreed to do silly stunts for 24 hours to welcome the start of another season and to win a trip to the 2008 Pro Bowl in Honolulu. In a competition sponsored by the Dish Network, they chanted, sang karaoke, played tabletop football, tried throwing passes, and put together a grill with one team member blindfolded. They also participated in a chicken eating contest and painted faces as well as raced through the streets of Denver on a scavenger hunt for a fellow fan. Donald Quinlan and Matthew Leibham, roommates at the University of Wisconsin, led through most of the 24-hour competition and emerged at the top of the heap. The Cleveland team, Dawn and Gary Brochetti, were close behind, followed by Betty and Roy Conrad, Green Bay fans. The other teams: Denver, Jayson Garcia and Emily Rainero; Charlotte, Mark Whitlock and James Halt; Columbus, Edward and Julie Arnold; Dallas, Laynette and Ronnie Seay. An eighth team, Cincinnati’s Vic Morgan and Shawn Cross, dropped out before the end of the marathon, but not before winning a chanting contest while wearing tiger costumes.

Stem Cell Breakthrough

Stem_Cell_BreakthroughPerhaps no other field of medicine is garnering more hope than stem cell research. And it is not necessarily controversial. Every day it seems there is new evidence that stem cells derived at birth from umbilical cord blood may help treat dozens of diseases, including leukemia. Now – there’s a breakthrough in stem cell science, with new technology that lets doctors recover and bank cells from the placenta, too. “By collecting and banking stem cells from the placenta, in addition to those from the umbilical cord, parents are significantly increasing the number of stem cells banked,” says Dr. Robert Hariri, who developed the technology with a team of scientists at LifebankUSA.. “These cells are a perfect donor match for the infant – and possibly a family member – and they improve the likelihood that a stem cell transplant, if needed, will be successful.” Our cut piece on this exciting breakthrough in stem cell science includes b-roll of a birth, collection of the cells and laboratory visuals. We also include soundbites with Dr. Hariri, as well as with Hall of Famer Rod Carew, whose daughter might have survived leukemia ten years ago had a perfect stem cell match been available, and with a parent who banked placental and cord blood stem cells for their family.

Enter David Joachim, the “grill master” for the American Tailgaters Association and the author of 3 grilling books, including the new definitive guide to outdoor cooking “Mastering the Grill,” who offers up some great ideas to bring to the stadium parking lot. “The key is to plan ahead, take advantage of super-convenient products, and take it up a notch with some interesting – yet very simple – recipe ideas.” You can find tips and food suggestions by going to www.moreaboutthat.info, click on our Tailgating 101 segment and then download our podcast to see the segment online.
