Dessum9 talks to an urban cyclist about biking the city. Now that the oil shock has pushed gas prices over $6 a gal, what's changed in the biking scene?

An Often-Overlooked Alternative Transportation: Quads. Why do people always laugh and expect that I must also carry a big boom box on my shoulder? The fact is that outdoor wheels and skate technologies have come a long way - so, if you are like me and all your childhood rollerskating practice caused you to almost kill yourself by not knowing how to stop on roller blades... have comfort that the slightly spongy outdoor wheels made now make it MUCH easier to deal with bumpy terrain and all your instincts that tell you your stopper is in the front... well, they are. I can't tell you how awesome my quads are outside. In this case, I was making my way though a community garage sale easliy.. sailing past people looking at me like... wtf? are you seriously on roller skates? Argh! Yes. Yes I am. And they rock. Do you have a problem with that. Whatever. If my work were closer (15 miles is a haul on skates), you know I'd skate it. If my city were more ped friendly, I think everyone could use them locally to get around.. well, ok, not everyone, but hey.
The guys at work took me to look at our Brown's Gas Generator... unused and stored in the warehouse. This welder is the byproduct of Yul Brown's work on Hydrogen fueled engines. His big vision was hydrogen fueled engines for automobiles and mass transit. And one guy at work claims that Yul Brown was involved in the Hummingbird Generator project which was supposedly squashed by the gov't. Does anyone have more info on what happened to the Hummingbird? Other projects that showed promise and "disappeared" ?

Here's another story about Brown's Gas. This has to be from like the 80's. Yul Brown is now dead... he died broke and his project never took off. There are some theories that he was "shut down" by the gov't. While I don't want to assume the gov't is conspiring to keep alternative fuels from developing, I guess I don't want to be naive either. I guess I could believe either way. If he was this close 20 years ago... then why don't we have a working HHO car? Water in/Water out... It seems a lot of people have been close. Is it really hard to imagine that the gov't could be $ influenced $ by those worried about oil becoming obsolete?
