Employment in Pennsylvania

Employment_in_PennsylvaniaPennsylvania's work force -- the number of people employed and those searching for work -- fell to 6,394,000 in June. A decrease of 12,000 workers as compared from the previous month of May. However… Pennsylvania's losses are in line with states across the region. Sectors losing jobs include textiles/apparel; furniture/fixtures, and electronics, down 1% after Tyco Electronics closed its East Berlin plant. The good news is that Manufacturers' News reported that Pennsylvania is home to more than 19,000 manufacturers employing over 800,000 workers, and ranks number 5 in the U.S. for manufacturing jobs and plants. Among the few major sectors in the state to gain jobs were Transportation Equipment and Rubber and miscellaneous plastic products. Tom Dubin, President of Manufacturer’s News Inc. says that Pennsylvania’s industrial employment is suffering due to automation, mergers, and outsourcing. But Dubin also noted that as wages in developing countries increase and fuel costs cut into freight-sensitive goods… some manufacturers are bringing production back home.

GM announces more cuts to North American workforce

GM_announces_more_cuts_to_North_American_workforceHello… Welcome to Employment Crossing News… I’m Evangeline Fabia. General Motors revealed yesterday of their plans to lay off salaried workers to weather a severe downturn in the US market. GM said the moves would raise $15bn to help cover losses, including $10bn from internal cost-cutting. GM says that several thousand jobs will be phased out through early retirement and buyout offers and that the company could resort to involuntary layoffs but did not want to. GM’s North America division has 40,000 salaried employees. The hurried restructuring is GM's second in just six weeks due to high gas prices, weakening auto sales and from customers steering away from SUV’s and gas guzzling trucks. Siemens Cuts Jobs and Pay

Siemens_Cuts_Jobs_and_PayAfter first cutting the size of its workforce, Siemens, is now looking to cut pay. In efforts to save some 1.2 billion Euro, or $1.9 billion, by 2010, Siemens is looking to restructure its labor spending. After eliminating over 12,000 positions worldwide, 390 sales employees from the Healthcare Unit in the Germany offices--will have their wages cut by 10%. While the motion is has not been finalized yet, it is in negotiations, as the unit is not unionized. The company is already under the microscope for its involvement in a corruption scandal about kickbacks for high priced foreign contracts. Siemens points to a slowing economy and a need to cut expenses as it trims its workforce by 4.2%, companywide. As for those left, they are safe for now, but just might have to get used to working more, for a little less. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com

Florida Unemployment Eqauls National Average

Florida_Unemployment_Eqauls_National_AverageIn a number that mirrors the national average, Florida’s unemployment rate dropped 1/10th of a percent from May, but is still high at 5.5%. The Florida Agency For Workforce Innovation reported the numbers, and that just over 78,000 jobs have been lost in Florida over the last 12 months. 52% of the states job losses were in the Construction Industry, who has been hit hardest by Florida’s economic downturn. May’s unemployment rate of 5.6% was the highest since October of 2006, a year when the Construction Job market was saved by worked created from Hurricane clean up. Now, as more jobs in the service industry offer stability and Florida’s workforce varies in age, experience, and education, the hole can be climbed out of. It might take some time though. A University of Florida study projects the state’s economy could continue to struggle into 2010! http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com

New Jersey Unemployment Down

New_Jersey_Unemployment_DownWhile the state lost over 4,100 jobs in June, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development reported a tenth of a percent drop, to 5.3%, in its unemployment rate. New Jersey did manage to add 100 public sector positions, while it saw a total of 4,100 jobs in manufacturing, transportation, and retail displaced. With a slow building market and retail activity, combined with the closure of Jevic Transportation and its 1,000 employees, New Jersey saws its 4 years and counting project of employment expansion, come to an end. Even though it is an increase, at a very small percent, the state is left searching for ways to increase jobs in the private sector. Although 5.3 is below the national unemployment rate of 5.5%, New Jersey can’t just rely on the numbers. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com

Wachovia Cuts Jobs And Costs

Wachovia_Cuts_Jobs_And_CostsIn what can be classified as a cost cutting strategy, Wachovia, will be laying off over 10,000 employees. As a response to an $8.9 billion loss for the second quarter, the nation’s 4th largest bank will not only shrink its workforce, but cut its dividend 87%, and stop lending through 3rd party brokers. After merging with A.G. Edwards last year, Wachovia has posted losses in each of the first two quarters of 2008. More bad news came as the bank was subject of an investigation of its Auction Rate Securities. However, despite a national credit crisis, and string of problems, Wachovia has reported profits in its capital management business, and 26% gains in its retail brokerage since last year. The bank believes its brokerage business good, but its holding company has continued to struggle. Now, Wachovia is working to shrink its balance sheet and stay profitable. It has to find ways to weather the American economic storm, even if it means putting people out of work. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com
