Haunted by the death of his mother, who was buried in the rubble of 9/11, and the departure of his wife and son, who can no longer deal with his inability to move on, Jim struggles with post traumatic stress disorder. He soon becomes so paranoid that he joins an anti-Muslim group and participates in unspeakable acts of violence. Trying to maintain his sanity, though, he does his best to remember what once made life so beautiful: his wife, his son, and the ability to live without fear.

Once upon a time kids asked their fathers, "What did you do in the war, daddy?" It's a question the next generation could ask all of us, who stood by as our government invaded Iraq to start a war whose purpose and rationale keep shifting and whose end is nowhere in sight, and who look now with nonchalance upon the unseen scars of those who are fighting it.
That's it for THE JOURNAL.
We'll be back next week.
I'm Bill Moyers.

Video 0 introduces a series of five emotional tuning programs, all designed to help people cope with the unpleasant feelings that often accompany a traumatic event. The four programs available as free streaming videos are entitled, “1- Calming Breath” “2-Emotional Meridians”, “3-Bilateral Brain Stimulation”, and 4-Humming Affirmations”. To download Video 5, “Humming Your Healing Touch” click here http://76.162.241.87/gpage8.htm
After practicing the protocol demonstrated in Video 5, people should be able to recall or imagine a traumatic event without experiencing disturbing feelings, such as fear, anger, grief, despair, confusion, shame, disgust, and craving. The traumatic event can be remembered from the past, experienced in the present as a flashback, or imagined in the future as a threat. If the original traumatic event created fear, the fear of re-experiencing this fear can result in escalating panic attacks that can be interrupted with emotional tuning.
The negative effects of trauma may include the avoidance of memory triggers, amnesia, intrusive thoughts, distressing dreams, flashbacks, irritability, and a reduced ability to concentrate, experience pleasure, feel tender emotions, and imagine a positive future. These effects can become chronic after exposure to frequent, intense traumatic events, such as war combat. Soldiers face considerable risk of developing these chronic effects, which clinicians call post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Avoidance of traumatic memory triggers, is one of the main symptoms of PTSD. Soldiers returning from war suffering the effects of trauma are about half as likely to seek treatment, as those returning without such symptoms. This paradoxical effect of trauma, is the major reason we created a series of practical self-help videos.
The videos can be downloaded from the internet, and used in the privacy of the trauma survivor's own home. The videos should be used in the same order as they are numbered.
