Meet the new “smart” car! The name was derived from the “S” in “Swatch” (as in watches), the “M” is taken from “Mercedes”, and the “art” comes from the implication that the car is a “work of art”. Over 800,000 of these zippy, quirky, eye-catching, TINY 8 foot 8 inch long “microcars” have been sold in 36 countries around the world in recent years, so I’ve seen them many times during visits to England and France . . . and, AND . . . in January 2008 they will finally be sold in the USA, so I wanted to let American video watchers see a preview of the car. (I filmed this particular smart car in Chichester, England in October.) The car has NO trunk, NO hood, NO rear seats, and NO spare tire, but DOES have a 70 horsepower engine (capable of speeds up to 90mph) that sits behind the two seats . . . and by way of size comparison to another well known "small" car . . . the current compact VW Beetle is actually FIFTY PERCENT LONGER than this microcar! . . . and, AND . . . the new generation Mini Cooper is smaller than the VW Beetle, but even the MINI COOPER is 3 feet 3 inches longer than the Smart microcar!! LOL So welcome America to the world of the “microcar”.
