Safe Surgery Saves Lives Initiative

Safe_Surgery_Saves_Lives_InitiativeWith major surgery now occurring at a rate of 234 million procedures per year – one for every 25 people – and studies indicating that a significant percentage result in preventable complications and deaths, the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a new safety checklist for surgical teams to use in operating theatres, as part of a major drive to make surgery safer around the world "Preventable surgical injuries and deaths are now a growing concern," said Dr Margaret Chan, Director-General of WHO. "Using the Checklist is the best way to reduce surgical errors and improve patient safety." Several studies have shown that in industrial countries major complications are reported to occur in 3-16% of inpatient surgical procedures, with permanent disability or death rates of approximately 0.4-0.8%. In developing countries studies suggest a death rates of 5-10 % during major surgery. Mortality from general anaesthesia alone is reported to be as high as one in 150 in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. Infections and other postoperative complications are also a serious concern around the world. These studies suggest that approximately half of these complications may be preventable. Patient Involvement- We Need Your Questions

Patient_Involvement-_We_Need_Your_QuestionsMedical mistakes occurring in hospitals account for an estimated 44,000 to 98,000 deaths each year, according to the Institute of Medicine. That means that these mistakes lead to more deaths per year than motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer or AIDS. Research shows that consumers who get more involved with their health care can greatly improve the safety of their care, but patients are generally unaware of what to do to help prevent medical mistakes. According to a recent study conducted by AHRQ and the Kaiser Family Foundation, 57 percent of Americans do not believe that preventable medical errors occur often. The new “Questions Are the Answer: Get More Involved With Your Health Care” campaign is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (www.ahrq.gov), a lead agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and aims to encourage all patients and caregivers to become more active in their health care by asking questions.

7000 people die every year because of medication errors. It's time to require e-prescribing in Medi

7000_people_die_every_year_because_of_medication_errors.__Its_time_to_require_e-prescribing_in_MediAd is a 'Wake Up Call' to Refocus the Medicare Debate on Patients, Not Just Providers Calling e-prescribing "the most important issue to patients in the current Medicare debate," the Pharmaceutical Care Management Association (PCMA) today unveiled a new TV, print, and online ad campaign urging policymakers to require the use of electronic prescribing (e-prescribing) in Medicare "before more people die." The new ad, featuring a woman mourning at a gravesite, highlights the fact that more than 7,000 people die every year because of medication errors. "This ad is a wake up call to refocus the Medicare debate on patients, not just the providers who serve them. From a patient's perspective, e-prescribing is by far the most important issue in the current Medicare debate because it could save their life or the life of someone they love," said PCMA President and CEO Mark Merritt. "Yet the debate focuses almost exclusively on providers, not patients. That needs to change. To view Multimedia News Release, go to http://www.prnewswire.com/mnr/pcma/32760/

Zix Corporation Issues Statement Supporting Bipartisan Push for Medicare e-Prescribing Requirement

Zix_Corporation_Issues_Statement_Supporting_Bipartisan_Push_for_Medicare_e-Prescribing_RequirementZix Corporation (ZixCorp®), (Nasdaq: ZIXI), the leader in hosted services for email encryption and e-prescribing, issued a statement today supporting the bipartisan efforts to require electronic prescribing for Medicare prescriptions. On June 6, Senator Max Baucus (D- MT), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, introduced the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (S. 3101). This bill included positive incentives beginning in 2009 and a requirement to write Medicare prescriptions using a qualified e-prescribing system starting in 2011, enforced by financial penalties on physicians who fail to e-prescribe after that date. "ZixCorp applauds the bipartisan efforts in Congress to promote the widespread adoption of e-prescribing, which also has the support of the Administration," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "We believe that Medicare, as the largest payor in the United States, can significantly accelerate the utilization of this technology through financial incentives to the physician. We're pleased to offer a system that meets the criteria defined by the bill and anticipate that this legislation, should it become law, will have a considerable impact on the e-prescribing industry." As the leader in the e-prescribing industry, ZixCorp has been a pioneer in successfully providing this life-saving technology to doctors. ZixCorp has continued to maintain its focus on primary care, with a particular emphasis on small practices, since 75 percent of those physicians in the United States are in practices of 5 or fewer physicians.
