You would think with increases in fuel costs, public transportation demand would rise too?
Maybe.
Still, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has put together the “Program to Eliminate the Gap.” The MTA will be eliminating 500 jobs in its bus and subway divisions from the 2009 budget.
With 68,000 employees, the MTA knows its expenses are too high. It plans to cut controllable expenses by 6%, over the next 4 years. In addition, the MTA has already made reductions of 5% over the past 4 years.
While the cutbacks will help with overall operations of the Transportation Authority, they must work hard to avoid reducing service and reliability, since that’s what makes them money.
