Dryad
though midday when first
I entered this wood
the mighty oaks seem shrouded
in the light of dusk
faint notes of an unknown minstrel
waft through the air,
heightening my senses,
my surroundings now in focus
mottled sunlight dancing at my feet
narrows to a shaft racing ’cross my path
glancing from the trunk of one oak,
then another and another
my feet suddenly frozen in place,
I turn to follow its path,
strain to keep it in sight
as it dances to the music
my eyes following that light,
I glimpse a maiden shadowed by an oak,
visible for a moment,
t hen just as soon gone
again she appears, dancing it seems
to the next oak, and the next;
dancing with the light or the trees?
I cannot tell
at once, the shaft of light meets the trunk
of a massive oak and broadens,
diffuses, softens and reveals
lines softer yet
I stand in awe at the sight
of a woman as one with the tree,
a classic beauty, a nymph
awaiting dear friend Artemis
though wrapped in the strength of the oak
she is vulnerable seeming;
unwilling to hold my glance
she turns away, as do I
all that is light leaves my eyes
for a brief moment,
then returns to reveal the dusky scene
that surrounded me moments earlier
standing alone once more,
my feet no longer rooted to the ground,
I step forward and realize
the notes are fading into the distance

The first of two compositions I have written this week. This was written as a solo and the other I will record as a bigger multiguitar layered thingy. At some point...
A "Dryad" is a female tree spirit in ancient mythology. I don't know why but this piece made me think of walking through a forest.

Lem's latest video is a composition without a title. His request for a title inspired this poem. If I could sing, I suppose these might be lyrics.

Just me recording a wee idea live on my SLG100S. Any suggestions for a title most welcome! 8^) Might record this properly or expand on it sometime. I ran some reverb on the audio after recording.

I haven't been doing much in the way of music recently (been busy with other stuff) but I made this wee tune up a couple of days ago and kind of liked it so decided to record it and do a video. It's a very simple thing I made up messing around with D, G and A chords.

A poem inspired by LemKuiper's composition "Solitude".
I think Lem's own video is the best graphic for this poem.
Solitude
A few moments alone with six strings
Therapeutic… free from stress
Whether composing…
Or simply feeling the response
an instrument can give;
reflecting my mood,
punctuating a statement
or drawing a scene,
hoping others can visualize the same
A few moments alone with six strings

I haven't played anything live to camera for a wee while. I wrote this last week. It's a very simple thing really but I kind of like it. I wish I had a decent microphone so I could record the audio better when playing live to camera like this but the noise from my PC would interfere too much. So at the moment I'm reduced to recording with camera only.
A poem inspired by LemKuiper's "La Valse Ambre"
Amber Moon
Sister, almost, to our earthly realm,
she graces the night sky
with her pale presence.
As Selene in her silver chariot,
her beams shone brightest
off the ocean’s waves.
Seduced by Pan,
but enamored of Endymion,
giving him eternal sleep
that he might never grow old.
No less vulnerable as Diana,
her love for Orion
brought him to the heavens
to live forever.
……………………
In the distance,
a wolf’s howl escapes
from a dense forest.
……………………
Ever constant, through time and tide,
she is like a beacon from the heavens.
So it is that Luna draws Man
to journey, by way of Verne,
and by way of science through
Shepard, Glenn, Armstrong.
Through them, Man dared to touch
a goddess within the darkness,
but like a goddess,
she remains shrouded in mystery.

This is my latest composition. Another waltz which I called "La Valse Ambre" which is French for "The Amber Waltz". I finished writing this piece late on the evening of 3rd March 2007 as I watch the lunar eclipse out of my window. I had no idea what to call this piece (as usual) but as the moon turned a sort of red/amber colour I called it "The Amber Waltz". I like to put some names in French sometimes as they sound a bit more posh...lol.
Recorded and performed here on my Yamaha APX6NA electric classical. MP3 and sheet music available at www.lemkuiper.com

My first video of 2008! And my first piece of music recorded in my newly redecorated studio in my new home! Which is actually my old home where I was born and raised! In fact this room I have as my studio was once my old bedroom where I once spent many hours learning to play the guitar in my teenage years. 8^) I took some time out from DIY chores to record and video this today. Much more music to come in the near future! MP3 and sheet music available from www.lemkuiper.com as usual.
A poem inspired by LemKuiper's composition "First of Spring"

First of Spring
Branches hint at the green they hold in store;
The ground, too soft yet to leave the path,
yields signs of the renewal of life.
Shoots press through the last traces of snow.
Flocks overhead signal new arrivals,
Cold weather stragglers prepare to leave.
The breeze seems warmer, gentler,
no longer a servant of Winter.
A hare crosses the path ahead,
its winter white nearly faded.
Startled, a roe deer raises its head.
Still as stone, it awaits your passing.
Thoughts turn to the coast
and the antics of terns in flight…
a welcome sign of Spring’s arrival,
and walks-to-come along the shore.
A walk… like any other walk;
welcome, whether in highlands or low,
yet different in a way that’s welcome
more so, when it’s the first of spring.

Video for my latest composition. I wrote this a couple of weeks ago as a guitar solo but I've been ill this past week so did nothing with it. I recorded it yesterday by exporting a MIDI file of the guitar solo arrangement and assigning a softsynth to it in Sonar before layering the three guitar parts over that.

I wrote part of this wee tune years ago but never did anything with it. I added a bit more and have been trying to do something with this by layering more guitar parts over it but the more I messed with it the more it seemed to sound crappy. I decided it was maybe best left simple and just played it camera. I stuck a capo on just to make it sound a little brighter.
I have made a recording of a duet version of this in MP3 available on my site. www.lemkuiper.com
