Baboons usually live in the Horn of Africa and eat everything in sight, but one baboon in a small Lithuanian zoo has made a pet of a hapless chick, rather than having it as a meal. Mikis, a hamadryas baboon in a private zoo in Klaipeda, got hold of the chick when it wandered through the bars into his cage a month ago. The bird has grown since but the host of the cage still strokes the bird and takes care of it. The zoo owner says the chick should think itself lucky because chickens are brought from a local incubator as meals for the zoo's inhabitants. He admits though that the first couple of days were rough for the chick. The baboons live in Africa in troops of 50 to 300 and although usually vegetarian, they have on occasion been known to prey on animals and birds. The owner of the zoo says that Mikis probably feels lonely thousands of kilometers from his habitat. He tried unsuccessfully to make friends with other animals, before the chick accidentally wandered into his life.
