American Airlines announced plans to phase out 209 jobs at major Texas airports, including letting go 158 workers at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. The nation's largest airline told the Texas Workforce Commission on Tuesday that soaring fuel costs and a weakening economy have forced it to reduce jobs. Prior to Tuesday’s announcement, American sent letters to their 900 flight attendants informing them that their jobs could be gone as soon as Aug. 31. American Airlines is not the only carrier that has plans to cut back. In the past two days, AirTran Airways Inc. announced plans to eliminate 480 jobs while Comair Inc. estimates that it will let go 520 pilots and flight attendants. In Denver, Frontier Airlines Inc. plans to slash 456 jobs, and United Airlines Inc. has talked about laying off 150 workers. American Airlines said the cuts will come into effect on or about Sept. 5. RON HAY, NORTHWEST PILOT: Our CEO's $26.6 million is one complete annual payment to our pension fund. Our pension fund could be one more step closer to whole. The $25 million is probably in excess any funds needed to bring us back down to a medical benefit that we wouldn't have to pay anything.

For our New Year's trip to the Big Island, our family flew go! (a subsidiary of Mesa Air Group of Phoenix, Ariz.), which operates four Bombardier CRJ-200ER jets for its interisland service.
