Ten U.S. Teens Win 2008 National Financial Literacy Challenge Scholarship Awards from Charles Schwab

Ten_U.S._Teens_Win_2008_National_Financial_Literacy_Challenge_Scholarship_Awards_from_Charles_SchwabTen high school students were honored last night in Washington, D.C., at the National Financial Literacy Challenge Scholarship Awards Banquet, sponsored by Charles Schwab Foundation. The 10 winning teens each achieved a perfect score of 100 percent on the inaugural National Financial Literacy Challenge, a voluntary online test of personal finance knowledge, sponsored by the Department of the U.S. Treasury. The attending Award winners, who came from all over the country, were also recognized by the President's Advisory Council on Financial Literacy at its meeting this morning at the Department of the U.S. Treasury. In addition to the all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the winners and two guests each, winners will receive a $2,500 scholarship for use at the college or university of their choice. An additional $1,000 contribution in each of the winners' names will be made to the high schools or programs that provided their personal finance education, funded by Charles Schwab Foundation. (Hate)_MachineFrom Director Phil Caron: The concept for (Hate) Machine came out of the distortions/biases that I saw in post-911 media. Of course these distortions had always been there, but suddenly they became very blatant, and most media presented their material with a pro-war stance. As a Canadian who is regularly exposed to American, British and Canadian news, it was shocking to see such differences in storytelling, and to see how the same raw material could be twisted and personalized. (Hate) Machine is my response to the concept of media truth and is meant to provoke a closer inspection of the words and images that we rely on to interpret our world. (Hate) Machine was shot entirely in Ottawa with local actors and crew, and with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and SAW video co-op.

Honorary guests included Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson, who officially proclaimed Thursday, November 29 to be Literacy One Day by the City of Everett. Room to Read also honored the extraordinary ambassadorship of twelve students from Lakeside School in Seattle, who earlier this month raised a record-breaking $650,000. Also on hand was Scholastic's lovable Clifford the Big Red Dog and supporters of Room to Read's initiatives.
