Late on Brad Friedel twice saved Steven Gerrard shots, Peter Crouch went close with a header and Kuyt missed badly.

Liverpool left it late to take control of their Champions League tie against 10-man Inter Milan and ease the pressure on manager Rafael Benitez. Marco Materazzi harshly saw red on the half hour for two clumsy challenges on Fernando Torres, but Inter held firm. Torres forced a superb save from Julio Cesar, while Patrick Vieira was lucky not to concede a penalty for handball. But Dirk Kuyt eased home nerves with a deflected shot on 85 minutes and Steven Gerrard's firm drive sealed a fine win.

Fernando Torres grabbed a hat-trick as Liverpool came back from a goal down to beat Middlesbrough and move fourth. The Reds went behind when Tuncay Sanli headed in from six yards before Julio Arca's mistake let Torres around keeper Mark Schwarzer to slot in and level. Torres rifled in from 22 yards and side-footed in a third after Schwarzer rushed out of his goal without success. Stewart Downing poked in a shot for Boro but the Reds held on with the help of Jeremie Aliadiere being red-carded.

Liverpool enhanced their credentials for securing fourth place in the Premier League with a win over relegation-battling Bolton. The Reds took the lead when Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen dived to save a Steven Gerrard shot but bizarrely diverted the ball into his own net. Ryan Babel drove in a shot after Dirk Kuyt hit the bar and Fabio Aurelio volleyed in to extend Liverpool's lead. Tamir Cohen headed in for Bolton but it was too late to have an impact.

Liverpool strengthened their grip on fourth place after Fernando Torres' 28th goal of the season gave them victory in the Merseyside derby. The Spaniard expertly slotted the ball beyond Tim Howard for the only goal of the game after just seven minutes. With Yakubu deployed as a lone striker Everton created very little, while Liverpool spurned several chances. A rasping Steven Gerrard volley hit the post, while Everton's best chance fell to Leon Osman who headed wide.

Liverpool have the advantage after holding Arsenal to a draw in the Champions League quarter-final, first leg at The Emirates. Emmanuel Adebayor headed Arsenal in front in powerful fashion from Robin van Persie's cross after 23 minutes. Arsenal's lead lasted only three minutes before Steven Gerrard set up Dirk Kuyt to score from close range. The Gunners had a clear penalty appeal turned down after the break when Kuyt hauled back Alexander Hleb in the area.
