The Life and Death of a Sand Mandala

The_Life_and_Death_of_a_Sand_MandalaFilmed April 10th 2007, at a Buddhist shrine in Chichester, this video tells the story of a sand painting born only the day before. In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Mandala is brought to an end, honouring the Buddhas teaching of 'impermanence' : that all things arise and fade away - that all things are temporary in nature. In the video you will see many members of the local and visiting Tibetan Buddhist commuity contributing to the growth of the mandala, including the special guest Dr Akong Tulku Rinpoche. Many thank you to David Mackenzie-Dewhirst for his kind help and guidance in making the mandala, and should anyone like to enquire further about sand mandalas or other therapeutic artforms he practices, he can be contacted at: www.artmatters.nhs.uk The word Mandala is sanskrit and litterally means 'Circle' & 'Center', it suggests the notion that any centre is tied to it's circumferance, and that any circumferance is always determined by it's center, together they represent a wholeness. The Making Of The Mandala: Traditionally, the sand for madalas is made by crushing precious and semi-precious stones such as coral and turquoise amber etc, but this is no longer done. The sand is dyed using vegetable dyes or opaque tempera or acrylics, it is applied to the mandala disc (base) with a narrow metal funnel called a 'chakpu', which is tapped against to cause sufficient vibration for grains of sand to trickle out of its end. Stray grains of sand are moved back into place with small brushes, no adhesives are used to maintain the position of the sand. Mandala's to Promote Health & Healing: There has been medical research to show that the bodies immune system and innate healing ability are enhanced when we are relaxed, creativity appears to trigger the bodies relaxation response, promoting one's own health and healing and increasing stress reduction. Finally: In the dismantling of the mandala one should remain in the same relaxed and meditative state of mind, as in its creation. Mandala's can help us to understand that all things are impermanent and exist only in relation to, and in independence on other things. The Kagyu tradition is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It is reknowned for its emphasis on meditation as embodied by such great masters as Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa, whose example inspired people throughout Tibet. The supreme head of the Kagyu lineage is the Karmapa. Kagyu Samye Dzong London is a branch of Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery in Scotland, a Buddhist Centre which was established in 1967 and now has branches worldwide. Kagyu Samye Dzong London is under the direct guidance of Dr. Akong Tulku Rinpoche and Ven.Lama Yeshe Losal, whose lives and activity are an endless source of inspiration for the thousands of people who come into contact with them every year. They are known for their tireless efforts in preserving the purity of the Buddha's teachings, and the Kagyu lineage in particular and they visit Kagyu Samye Dzong London regularly giving teachings, guidance and empowerments. The day to day guidance of the centre is by Lama Zangmo. More information here: http://london.samye.org/london/

070225-1 RESPONSE TO MINISTER'S SERMON

070225-1_RESPONSE_TO_MINISTERS_SERMONThe minister at our UU Fellowship gave a sermon on one of the Buddhist 8 fold paths. She made a comment on how the online game Second Life adopted many of Buddhist principles as rules of behavior. During discussion afterwards, one of the members said that they felt that Second Life was irrelevant, that people hide in avatars of themselves, so that no real comunication takes place. In this walking video, I give my take on it, since I was up teaching the high schoolers. About a year ago, I gave a sermon attempting to explain the approaching era of trans-humanism, I didn't do a good enough job! lots of work to do, got to help get people ready for the future, so it doesn't hit them like a truck!

Youism

YouismYouism is an idea with the belief that each individual has the right to pick and choose what ever belief that makes sense to them and which will allow them to live a life of peace and happiness. You can pick and choose different aspects of other religions to create your own. The only requirement is that what you choose to believe must lead you to do good in life and not intentionally cause harm to others. The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" will be your way of life. What ever it is you believe, it is your own religion. No one has the right to force you into believing what they believe in as long as you are already leading a peaceful happy life. This goes the other way around as well. Instead of trying to make the whole world fall under one religion, Youism seeks to create billions of different religions, each one unique to each individual. Life is about choices. If your current beliefs is a burden, let it go. Choose something that will give you happiness. If God works for you, then believe in Him with all your heart. If evolution works for you, great. If Xenu works for you, then.. um..well, you are one of the most open-minded person on this planet.. more power to you. Also know that life is about change. The same beliefs that work for you now might not work for you at a different stage in your life. It's okay to drop some beliefs/ideas and adopt new ones. Remember, the ultimate goal is happiness. Why the name Youism? Because it's about letting those around you believe what they want to believe and still accept them and love them and see them as equals in spiritual importance. As long as they're living a happy peaceful life and they do good unto others, that's all that matters. No one is right or wrong. Don't try to "prove" others wrong and you right. Many religions out there, from what I see, is about "ME". It's about "I am right, you are wrong". It doesn't even matter if the other person's belief gives them peace and happiness. Youism is about respecting other people's beliefs. It's about accepting the idea that there's no right religion. It is however okay to help unhappy people find a path to happiness. If you happen to agree with this "Youism", just add "ism" behind your name, this is your own personal religion/belief, not mine, not anyones, but yours. It's really "Your Name-ism", but Youism sounds less lame. Maybe when we start focusing on others by focusing on ourselves and our actions and how it will effect others and on what makes us happy and to simply do more of it, instead of forcing others to believe in what we believe and what we think will make them happy, there will be less wars and violence in this world. (Now that is what is called a RUN-ON sentence) "Love Life, Do Good, Live Well" - K.N.

Vajrasattva Mantra

Vajrasattva_MantraMy first attempt at a meditation video, not as good as I'd like it to be, but a nice try. Vajrasattva purifies and grants absolution to the sincere penitent. Here the Mantra is recited by H.E. Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Simply hearing this Mantra recited is to receive a blessing, but this is especially so when the Mantra is recited by a holy man of such spiritual stature. OM VAJRASATTVA HUM.
