A song about three loves of my life, two of which are travelling and singing.
I wrote this as the concluding song for my second CD, "Laws Of Chance".
Lyrics:
From Turkey to Tana Toraja,
From Sarawak to Spain,
We've walked the streets of Paris
And the beach along the Seine.
...We've wandered the world together
...Exploring far and wide,
...And the journey's always brought me joy
...Since you've been by my side.
From sunrise on the Ganges,
From Bangkok to Berlin,
To sunset over Angkor Wat
And the limestones of Guilin.
Under the Saharan starlight
Sharing tajine in the dark,
Our hearts beat to the Bedouin drums
While the sand-flies made their mark.
I sang about living in Paris,
In Brunei and Hong Kong.
Wherever we roam I feel at home
For you are my sweetest song.
My friend and my companion,
You've made it all worthwhile,
For you have always brought me joy
Since I walked you down the aisle.

When I reached a hundred subscribers on YouTube, I wrote this song, my two hundredth upload, to celebrate. It is basically just a list of all their names, with a few comments thrown in where appropriate. I wrote it to blandmangopatterson, because he was my first non-family subscriber.
The tune is the one Dylan used for "Song to Woody", which Woody Guthrie had used for "1913 Massacre" and had probably got from some earlier song.
Lyrics:
Hey, blandmangopatterson I wrote you this song.
If I list my subscribers I just can't go wrong.
I've reached a hundred subscribers at last.
If I shout all their names out, then I'll have to sing fast.
There's senoritalyndsie and rocrebelgranny,
And in Canada there's a sweet singer named Annie.
Capo420 and you, shawnmcnair!
Keep those songs coming. You've so much to share.
Squiresfan, keep singing and scraping those strings.
There's JohnnyBazooka; like Dylan he sings,
There's my friend, coolanddark, and the lovely sisjewell,
Ottawarocket, losthills, all your songs are so cool.
When I'm watching YouTube I'm always so glad
To see those great videos made by vidlad.
Greetings to XxWaveWarlockxX

And I thank my subscribers who make it worthwhile.

Getting ready for my ride for my R6 first servicing. It costs me BND$40 for the filter oil, washer and 3L engine oil altogether. Now I can throttle up to 8500 rpm! before the second servicing at 2000 Km...

I lived in Brunei Darussalam for two years and some months. We were stationed in the exciting city of Kuala Belait (KB), near the border of Malaysia, where we would make regular trips to stock up on beer and wine, which can not be sold (legally) in Brunei. I joined up with three other expats - a Scotsman, an Irishman and an Englishman, [no, I'm not telling a joke!] to form a folk group called The Belaiters (pronounced "Blighters"). Fortunately two of the others were good guitarists so I could get away with a bit of background strumming.
Realising that most of the great cities of the world had songs written about them, I thought it was time to celebrate KB in song. So I wrote this to sing at some of our performances. It will not make a lot of sense to people unfamiliar with the delights of this great cosmopolitan city, but I'll be happy to answer any questions about the lyrics.
In Brunei, I mainly sang this song to expat audiences, but, since I put it up on YouTube, it has become a big hit with the locals. Quite unexpected as my songs about other places, e.g. Hong Kong, have had very little impact.
Lyrics:
Driving down the road from Jerudong
Don't just stop when you reach Tutong.
With a little bit of luck you might
Make it all the way to Kuala Belait.
...I'm going back to KB, baby.
...That's where I want to be,
...Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
...And the donkey nods at me.
In the middle of the city we've got Jalan Pretty.
That's where all the action is at night.
You can have a lot of fun in Bandar Sri Begawan
But you can't beat Kuala Belait.
...I'm going back to KB, baby.
...That's where I want to be,
...Where the teapot sits on the roundabout
...And the donkey nods at me.
...Bandar Seri Begawan
...Is not the place for everyone.
...'Cause I love - that's right -
...I love Kuala Belait.
This city is expanding at a furious pace.
New buildings going up all over the place
The High Court will open - one of these days.
(Spoken: Well ... it might.)
I love Kuala Belait.
We've got plenty of rice and the noodles are nice.
This town is a gourmet's delight.
You can't go wrong with roti kosong
At New Akbar in Kuala Belait.
In KB town you can watch the sun go down
Sitting on the sand at night.
See the oil rigs burning bright, while the sand flies bite.
On the beach at Kuala Belait.
Let me make this clear -- I really like Seria
The billionth barrel is a wonderful site,
But nothing can compare with the excitement in the air
In downtown Kuala Belait.

The legend of Nakhoda Manis is Brunei's best-known story. This tale of the importance of filial piety has counterparts in Indonesia, where it is known as Malin Kundang, and Malaysia, where it is called Si Tanggang.
Jong Batu is a rock in the Brunei River, shaped like a ship, and Kampong Ayer is the world's largest water village, located in the capital, Bandar Sri Begawan.
Lyrics:
There was a wealthy widow
Dang Ambon was her name.
She shared her riches with her son;
A merchant he became.
Nakhoda Manis had it all
Beyond his heart's desire,
But of his gold and worldly goods
He soon began to tire.
He wished to see the world beyond
His home in Kampong Ayer.
...Nakhoda Manis, my sweet son,
...So far across the sea,
...It's many a tear I'll shed for you
...'Til you come home to me.
"Oh, mother, I must travel,
But do not be afraid.
I'm bound to Sulok city
To carry on my trade.
It won't be long 'til I return.
You know that I'm no liar.
When my business is completed
No storm nor flood nor fire
Will bar my way back home again
To you and Kampong Ayer."
"I beg you not to sail away
And leave me here alone,
For I'm afraid you won't come back
To your water village home."
"I must go over the sea mother.
Send me off with a prayer."
"I can not make you change your mind,
So leave and take good care."
He kissed her once and sailed away
As she cried and tore her hair.
She prayed to Allah for her son
And tried to dry her tears
But she never heard a word from him,
As she waited through the years.
She spent her gold on charity,
And with money did inspire
The holy men to pray for him
And make her hopes grow higher,
'Til she became the poorest soul
In all of Kampong Ayer.
At last the news came to her ears
That filled her full of joy
A boat was coming up the river
And she would see her boy.
"Oh, who will lend me a little old boat
So I can see my son?"
She sailed to the ship as it anchored
As fast as the boat could run.
And loudly she called, "My dearest son,
How I missed you when you were gone!"
Nakhoda Manis had prospered
And made a pleasant life
And had taken a beautiful lady
To be his loving wife.
When he heard the voice of his mother,
He was happy and wanted to say,
"These two women I love the best
Will meet each other today."
"Who is that dirty old woman?
Please tell her to go away!"
Sadly Nakhoda Manis said,
"My mother is rich and young.
Tell the old woman she's made a mistake,
For I am not her son."
And so Dang Ambon's little boat
Was pushed away by the crew,
"Nakhoda Manis, my money has gone,
My youth and beauty too,
But come back to me my loving son.
I know you miss me too."
Her little boat was pushed ashore,
Just as her son had spoken.
Dang Ambon fell upon the shore
Her heart forever broken.
Then all at once the sky grew dark
And the crew began to shout.
The sea grew high and stormy
And it tossed the ship about.
The cries of the crew and his lovely bride
Were loud but soon drowned out.
A bolt of lightning struck the mast
And the gallant ship went down.
Nakhoda Manis and his wife
And his crew were doomed to drown.
When everything was calm again,
The people saw a view
That made them feel a sudden shock.
The ship and all its crew
Had turned into a giant rock.
They call it Jong Batu.
Never reject your mother's love,
For nothing can be worse.
Nakhoda Manis paid the price
And earned his mother's curse.
If ever you're in Brunei,
You'll find, if you enquire,
That lack of filial piety
Can have results as dire
As Jong Batu, that ship-shaped rock
On the way to Kampong Ayer.
