In what could be seen as a reaction to large, recent GM and Pfizer lay offs, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation approved tax breaks that will allow 13 companies to build or expand in Michigan. It was the largest, single day of tax credit approval in the history of the MEDC, but Governor Jennifer Granholm pushed for the $231 million investment as a way to diversify the state’s economy and not rely so heavily on the automotive industry. The biggest deal made was for the Dow and Kuwait Petrolium venture K-Dow, who will set up its headquarters in Michigan, along with 800 jobs for the $11 billion plastics company. Other companies will include makers of jet engine parts, solar panels, and auto sound systems who will combine to employ around 4,000 over the next few years. Also, the Michigan expansion, will create opportunities for secondary jobs, that will trickle down to areas of supply, retail, and housing.
